What to Expect at Your Child’s First Fencing Lesson
Trying fencing for the first time can feel unfamiliar, but your child does not need to know anything before arriving.
At BBFC, beginner lessons are designed to be clear, welcoming, and age-appropriate. Coaches introduce the sport step by step, starting with how to stand, how to move, and how to use the equipment safely.
You do not need to buy equipment
BBFC provides beginner equipment for the first lesson, including a mask, glove, and weapon. Your child should wear comfortable athletic clothes and cl0se-toed sneakers.
What your child will learn
During a first lesson, your child may learn:
The basic fencing stance, called en garde
How to advance and retreat
How to lunge
How to hold the weapon
Basic rules and etiquette
How to salute and listen for coach instructions
Why the first lesson is private
A one-on-one intro lesson helps beginners feel comfortable. Your child gets the coach’s full attention, and the coach can adjust the pace to your child’s age, coordination, and confidence level.
What happens next
After the intro lesson, your child will continue with an introductory fencing package that combines 2 private lessons and 2 group classes, before joining a class on an ongoing basis.
